Flat FTTH drop cable has a fiber down the middle and a strength member on each side, and opening it with a knife means either nicking the fiber or leaving the strength members to cut separately. The Jonard Tools FDS-312 does the whole job in one tool for the 2.1 × 3.1 mm drop cable that most FTTH installs use: it strips the outer jacket and cuts the strength members, FRP or steel, to expose the fiber inside without damaging it. A scaled fiber support on the tool sets the strip length, so every drop at a terminal or an ONT gets the same prep, and the non-slip cushion-grip handle keeps a day of drops from wearing out your hand.

Good to Know

The tool is for 2.1 × 3.1 mm flat drop; check the cable's dimensions before the first strip, since round drop and the larger flat sizes need a different tool, and a cable that doesn't seat flat in the jaws won't strip cleanly. Set the strip length on the scaled support to what the connector or the splice calls for before you cut, and use the same setting on every drop in a job. Strip the jacket and cut the strength members, then the fiber inside still has its 900 µm tight buffer or its 250 µm coating, which comes off with a fiber stripper such as the JIC-375 or the JIC-175 before cleaving. Steel strength members are sharp once cut and spring back; cut them flush and keep your fingers clear, and FRP leaves fiberglass splinters, so gloves are worth it. Don't bend the exposed fiber tightly where it leaves the jacket; the strength members are what protect it in service, and the strip point is where it's most exposed. Clean the bare fiber with an alcohol wipe after stripping and before cleaving, and put the cleaved end and any stripped glass in a sharps container. Keep the blades clean of jacket residue, and if the tool starts tearing the jacket rather than cutting it, the blades have reached the end of their life.
