SC, ST, and FC connectors are still the ones on most patch panels, pigtails, and PON terminals, and the Jonard Tools FCC-250 is the push-to-clean cleaner for their 2.5 mm ferrules. Flip the cap open, insert the connector, and push: the dual rotational tip turns against the ferrule while the Slide-Guide feeder brings up fresh micro tape, so every cleaning is the same cleaning and a dirty patch of tape is never reused. One cleaner handles more than 800 cleanings, and a visual indicator shows when it's running low. The housing and the cleaning cloth are static-free for ESD work, and the cleaner meets Telcordia GR-2923-CORE, iNEMI, IEC 61300-3-35, and Cisco EDCS 7027180 cleanliness standards. The blue tip marks it as the 2.5 mm size; for 1.25 mm LC and MU connectors, use the FCC-125.

Good to Know

Clean before every mating, every time, including a connector straight out of the bag, and clean both sides, the plug and the port; a dirty port recontaminates a clean plug on the first insertion. Push the cleaner on straight until it clicks and let it run through its rotation; a half push leaves a partial clean. The cleaner works on both UPC and APC ferrules, since the tip follows the end face, but keep APC and UPC connectors apart in the panel, because mating the two damages the end face and no cleaner fixes that. Check the cleaning with an inspection scope where you can, since a cleaner can only remove what it reaches, and a connector that still reads dirty after two pushes probably has something stuck to it that wants a wet-to-dry clean. For the far side of an adapter in a bulkhead, the tip goes into the adapter the way a plug would. The tool is for 2.5 mm ferrules only; LC and MU take the 1.25 mm FCC-125. Keep the cap closed in a pocket or a bag, since a dusty tip transfers dust, and replace the cleaner when the indicator shows the tape is nearly gone rather than stretching it, since the point is that every clean uses fresh tape. Never look into a connector or a port on a live link while cleaning it; unplug or confirm it's dark first, which matters more on a PON, where the downstream can be strong.
