Most fiber faults that show up at turn-up are dirt on an end face, and the Jonard Tools FCC-125 is the cleaner for the small ferrules where it's hardest to see: 1.25 mm LC and MU connectors. Flip the cap open, push the tool onto the connector, and one push rotates the tip while the Slide-Guide micro tape feeder advances fresh cleaning tape, so every cleaning is the same cleaning and a dirty patch of tape is never reused. The cartridge is good for more than 800 cleanings, and a visual indicator shows how much tape is left so it doesn't run out mid-job. The housing and the cleaning cloth are static-free for ESD-safe work around transceivers, and the cleaner meets Telcordia GR-2923-CORE, iNEMI, IEC 61300-3-35, and Cisco EDCS 7027180 cleanliness standards. The orange tip marks it as the 1.25 mm size; for 2.5 mm FC, SC, and ST connectors, use the FCC-250.

Good to Know

Clean before every mating, every time, including a connector straight out of the bag, and clean both sides, the plug and the port; a dirty port recontaminates a clean plug on the first insertion. Push the cleaner on straight until it clicks and let it run through its rotation; a half push leaves the tip on the end face and a partial clean. Check the cleaning with a microscope or an inspection scope where you can, since a cleaner can only remove what it reaches, and a connector that reads dirty after two pushes probably has something stuck to it that wants a wet-to-dry clean. The tool is for the LC and MU ferrule only; it won't reach into a 2.5 mm adapter, and the 2.5 mm FCC-250 is the one for SC, ST, and FC. For cleaning the far side of an adapter in a bulkhead, the tip goes into the adapter the way a plug would. Keep the cap closed when the cleaner is in a pocket or a bag, since a dusty tip transfers dust. When the indicator shows the tape is nearly gone, replace the cleaner rather than stretching it; the whole point is that every clean uses fresh tape. Never look into a connector or a port on a live link while cleaning it; unplug or confirm it's dark first.
