Good to Know

Use the nest that matches the terminal, not the wire: insulated terminals are color coded by gauge range (red for 22 to 18 AWG, blue for 16 to 14, yellow for 12 to 10) and crimp in the insulated nest sized for that color, while a bare terminal goes in the non-insulated nest for its gauge, where the die folds the barrel into the conductor rather than squeezing an insulation sleeve. Strip to the barrel length, no more; bare conductor showing between insulation and barrel is a short waiting to happen on a terminal strip. This is a plier-style tool rather than a ratchet, so the crimp is complete when you've squeezed to the stop, and a gentle pull test on every terminal is worth the two seconds. The 10 to 14 AWG nest is for bare terminals only; an insulated yellow terminal on 10 or 12 AWG wants a larger-framed crimper. It's a terminal tool, not a modular plug tool; RJ45 and RJ11 plugs need a modular plug crimper. Wipe it down if it gets wet; the finish resists corrosion but the stripping edges are bare steel.
