A spool of cable on the floor pays out in loops, picks up grit, and rolls away when it's pulled; a spool on a rod pays out straight. The Jonard Tools CC-5442 is a steel double-decker cable caddy that puts the spools on rods: two 12 in reels at once on the two tiers, or a single reel up to 17 in in diameter and 20 in wide, with a total load of up to 100 lb either way. It holds fiber, copper, coax, or anything else that comes on a reel, which makes it the stand for pulling Cat6 and fiber off the same cart. The frame is steel with dual leg chains that hold the legs at a fixed spread, slip-resistant feet that keep it put on a slick floor and keep the floor unmarked, and a folding mechanism that collapses it to about 2 in thick for the truck. Good to Know

The 100 lb rating is the total load, not per tier, so two heavy reels have to add up under it; a full 1,000 ft reel of Cat6 is typically 30 to 35 lb, so a pair fits, but check the reel weight before loading something heavier. The 12 in limit for two reels is set by the spacing between the tiers, and the 17 in limit for a single reel by the floor clearance; a reel up to 20 in wide fits the 5/8 in spool rod, and a reel with a center hole smaller than that won't go on. Set the caddy on a level, clear patch of floor, spread the legs until the chains are taut, and refit the cotter pins after loading so a rod can't walk out under a pull. Pull from the top of the reel at a steady pace rather than yanking, since a reel that spins free overruns and throws a loop, and brake the reel by hand when the pull stops. The slip-resistant feet hold on a smooth floor but not on a slope, so chock it or move it on a ramp. Fold it only when it's empty, and keep the cotter pins with the frame; they're the one part that goes missing, and the caddy doesn't run safely without them. Steel rusts if it lives in a wet truck bed, so wipe it down after a rainy job.
