A wire stripper lives in a pouch that gets rained on, and most strippers answer that with a coating that wears off the first year. The Jonard Tools WSS-1020 answers it with the metal: the whole tool is 50 HRC stainless steel, hard enough to hold a precision stripping edge and stainless enough to shrug off the weather. It cuts and strips the wire sizes used most, solid conductors from 10 to 20 AWG (2.60 to 0.81 mm) and stranded from 12 to 22 AWG (2.05 to 0.64 mm), and the same holes strip 2 to 3 mm fiber optic jackets. Bending holes loop a stripped conductor for a screw terminal, and cutting holes shear 8-32 and 10-32 screws to length with a clean thread. The handles are curved to fit the hand and a coil spring opens them after every cut, which is what keeps a day of stripping from ending in a sore hand. It's 7.2 in and a third of a pound.

Good to Know

Solid and stranded wire of the same gauge strip in different holes, since the stranded range is offset two sizes: a 14 AWG solid goes in the 14 solid hole, a 14 AWG stranded in the hole marked for it, and a stranded wire in a solid hole loses a strand or two at every strip. When in doubt, strip a scrap and look at it. Pull the slug off straight rather than levering sideways, which scrapes the conductor. On fiber cordage, the stripping hole takes the 2 to 3 mm jacket and nothing under it; the aramid, the buffer, and the coating are jobs for the Kevlar cutters and a fiber stripper such as the JIC-375. Loop solid conductor in the bending hole and set the hook on the terminal so it closes clockwise, the direction the screw tightens. To shear a screw, thread it into the matching hole from the correct side, cut, and back it out, which cleans the thread as it comes; a screw cut with the wire cutter instead leaves a burr that won't start in the device. The cutter is for copper conductors in the tool's range, not for steel, cable with the jacket on, or screws outside the 8-32 and 10-32 holes. Stainless resists rust but not neglect; wipe it dry after a wet day and oil the pivot now and then. Work on dead circuits only; the handles are for comfort and aren't rated as insulation.
