Most of the round distribution cable a technician opens falls between 8 mm and 28 mm, and the Jonard Tools CST-900 is a compact strip and ring tool that covers that whole span in one body. Set the blade depth with the large adjustment screw, seat the cable, and the blade does the rest: it rotates with the cut, so a turn around the cable makes the ring and a pull along it makes the slit, with no mode to switch. The blade is coated with titanium nitride for a longer life, faster cutting, and less wear, and a spare is stored in the handle, so a dulled edge is a minute's interruption rather than a trip to the van. Good to Know

Set the depth before every new cable: back the screw off, seat the cable, and bring the blade in until it just scores through the jacket on a test ring at the cable end, since the aim is to cut the jacket and nothing underneath, and the right depth on a 1 mm jacket is wrong on a 2 mm one. For a mid-span entry, ring at both ends of the opening first by rotating the tool a full turn, then draw it along the cable between the rings; the blade swings to the slit position on its own as you pull, so there's no lever to move. Keep the tool square to the cable on the slit so the cut runs straight rather than spiraling. Peel the jacket in sections and watch the buffer tubes or the conductors as it lifts; a depth that was right at the ring can find a thinner spot on the slit. The tool is for round jacketed cable; armored cable needs the AST-200 CableSaber, flat drop needs the FDS-312 or FOD-2000, and the smallest cable below 8 mm belongs to the CSR-1575 or the MS-series. Swap in the spare blade from the handle when the cut starts to tear rather than slice, and order another spare so the handle isn't empty; a dull blade is what wanders into the core. Cut jacket edges are sharp; gloves on the peel.
