Most of the cable a fiber technician opens in a day sits between 1 mm and 8 mm, and the Jonard Tools CSR-1575 is the one pocket tool that covers that whole span. It slits lengthwise and rings around fiber optic cable jackets and buffer tubes from 1.2 mm to 7.5 mm in diameter: the reversible V block holds small cable from 1.2 mm to 3 mm on one side, and the adjustable slot takes larger cable from 3 mm to 7.5 mm on the other, which also covers network cable up to CAT 8. The blade depth adjusts to match the jacket, so it cuts the sheath and stops short of the fibers or the pairs underneath, and the spring-loaded body opens itself after each cut for fast, one-handed work. Set the depth once on a scrap, then ring, slit, and peel.

Good to Know

Pick the side by the cable's outside diameter: the V block for 1.2 mm to 3 mm, the slot for 3 mm to 7.5 mm, and when a cable sits right at 3 mm, use whichever holds it without play. Set the blade depth on a scrap of the same cable before the first live cut; back it off until it scores the jacket without going through, then add depth a little at a time, since the aim is to cut the sheath and nothing underneath. For a ring cut, close the tool on the cable and rotate it a full turn; for a slit, close it and draw it along the cable. On a mid-span entry, make the two ring cuts first, then the slit between them, and peel the jacket in sections. The cut leaves the jacket scored rather than severed on thin-walled tubes; flex the tube at the ring to snap it, which keeps the blade off the fibers. On copper cable, the depth setting is what keeps the blade off the pair insulation, so check a stripped end for nicks before you terminate. The blade is sharp and spring-loaded; close the tool when it isn't in your hand. Larger cable belongs to the mid-span slit and ring tools, which start at 1.2 mm and run up to 18.2 mm across the range.
