A UR or UY splice connector is only as good as the crimp that closes it, and a crimp from a general-purpose plier is a guess. The Jonard Tools JIC-891 is the connector-crimper plier made for the job: a 5-1/2 in plier whose jaw presses UR, UY, and UG connectors, 709 series connectors, B type connectors, and AMP Tel-Splice connectors to the right depth, on combinations of plastic and pulp insulated 19, 22, 24, and 26 AWG copper conductors and 20 gauge plastic insulated copper-steel wire. The pliers are heat-treated carbon steel with induction-hardened cutting edges on the 1/2 in cutter, and the ergonomic handle has a double-dipped plastic grip for comfort and the torque a full crimp takes. Good to Know

Match the connector to the crimp nest before you squeeze; UR, UY, UG, 709, B, and Tel-Splice connectors each seat in the jaw, and a connector crimped in the wrong spot is either loose or crushed. Slide the conductors fully into the connector, unstripped where the connector is the insulation-displacement type, then crimp once with firm, full pressure until the cap bottoms out; a second light crimp doesn't fix a first one that stopped short. Pulp insulated conductors are older and more fragile than plastic, so handle the pair gently and make the crimp in one motion. The 20 gauge copper-steel rating is for the plastic insulated drop wire type; a heavier conductor than 19 AWG needs a different connector and tool. Use the side cutter for the slack and not for the connector, and confirm the pair is dead and disconnected from any line voltage or ringing current before you work it; the dipped grips are for comfort and torque, not insulation, and this is not a rated insulated tool. Wipe the tool dry after a wet pedestal and oil the joint now and then, since carbon steel rusts if it's left damp.
