The smallest cable is the easiest to ruin with a knife, and the Jonard Tools CSR-125 is the slit and ring tool sized for it: fiber optic cable, buffer tubes, and jackets up to 0.125 in (3.3 mm) in diameter. Spring-loaded handles open the jaws, the cable drops in, and a release and a turn makes the ring cut or a pull along the cable makes the slit, with the blade depth adjustable up to 0.125 in (3.3 mm) to match the jacket. It isn't only a fiber tool: the same range covers RG-174 and RG-187 coax and electrical cable of similar size, and it ships with two cutting blades plus a rounded blade for slitting a jacket without scoring the conductors or fibers inside. It's small enough to live in a shirt pocket and be there every time a drop, a tube, or a thin coax needs opening.

Good to Know

Set the blade depth on a scrap of the same cable before the first live cut: start shallow, add depth until the blade just scores through the jacket, and stop there, since on a 3 mm cable there's very little between the jacket and the fiber or the braid. For a ring cut, close the tool on the cable and rotate it a full turn; for a slit, close it and draw it along the cable. On a buffer tube, ring it and flex the tube at the score until it snaps rather than cutting all the way through, which keeps the blade off the fibers. Use the rounded blade for slitting when the cut is close to the conductors or the fibers, and the cutting blades for ringing and for thicker jackets. On coax, the depth has to clear the jacket but not the braid, and a nicked braid shows up as a bad return loss later, so check the first strip. The blade is sharp and spring-loaded; close the tool when it isn't in your hand, and keep the spare blades somewhere they won't find a fingertip. Cable above 3.3 mm belongs to the CSR-1575, which runs from 1.2 mm to 7.5 mm, or the MS-series mid-span tools.
