A BNC connector in the middle of a full patch panel or a video router can't be turned by hand; there isn't room for fingers between the neighbors, and a pair of pliers on the knurl scars the connector and the ones beside it. The Jonard Tools RBNC-3 is the tool for that connector: a 2.25 in socket that fits over the BNC and turns it, with a knurled body for grip and a steel loop on the end that doubles as a lever for a stiff connector and as the ring for a carabiner or a keychain. It's high carbon alloy steel with a nickel-plated finish, under two ounces, and lives on a key ring until the next time a BNC is buried in a high-density panel.

Features

  • Reaches crowded connectors. A compact 2.25 in design that gets to BNC connectors in high-density panels and hard-to-reach places.
  • Installs and removes. Turns the connector on and off without pliers or scarred knurls.
  • Knurled handle. A secure grip when the tool is slick or the connector is tight.
  • Steel loop. Clips to a carabiner or key ring, and gives leverage for installing or removing a stiff connector.
  • High carbon steel alloy, nickel plated. Durable and corrosion resistant.

Where It Fits

It suits broadcast and video engineers working BNC patch panels, routers, and SDI distribution amplifiers where the connectors sit a finger's width apart, security and CCTV installers connecting and disconnecting analog and HD-SDI cameras at a dense DVR or encoder, telecom technicians on DS3 and E3 panels, test and lab benches with rows of BNC on instruments and patch bays, anyone who has tried to twist a BNC behind a rack with a flashlight in their teeth, and a key ring where a two-ounce tool is there when the panel is full.

Good to Know

Fit the socket squarely over the connector's knurled body, push it on until it seats, and turn: a quarter turn clockwise locks a BNC and a quarter turn counterclockwise releases it, so the tool doesn't need to spin, just turn and lift. Use the loop as a lever only for the first bit of a stiff connector, and let the knurled body do the rest; forcing a BNC that won't turn is how a bayonet pin shears off inside the jack. The tool turns the connector; it doesn't pull it, so lift the connector off once it's unlocked rather than levering it out with the loop. Check which cable you're on before you unlock it, since in a dense panel the BNC the tool is on isn't always the one the label is next to, and a disconnected feed in a broadcast or security chain is noticed quickly. The nickel plating resists rust but not neglect; wipe it dry if it's been outside. The tool is sized for standard BNC; mini-BNC, HD-BNC, and other miniature bayonet connectors have their own tools.
