Communication scissors are the one tool a telecom or electrical tech reaches for more than any other, and the Jonard Tools TK-395 puts a good pair where you can reach them: the JIC-195 stainless steel scissors in a molded nylon pouch that clips to your belt. The blades are high carbon stainless steel, one of them serrated so a cable or a Kevlar strength member can't squirm out of the cut, with two stripping notches in the blade for 18 to 20 AWG and 22 to 24 AWG wire, so the pairs get stripped with the same tool that cut them. The dual-component nylon and Santoprene grip is shaped for a day of repetitive cuts, and a screw hidden under the hinge cap lets you set the blade tension to suit you and take up the slack as the scissors wear in. The pouch keeps the blades covered and the scissors on your hip, and the belt clip comes off if you'd rather drop it in a bag.

Good to Know

The two notches strip 18 to 24 AWG, which covers station wire, alarm cable, and the pairs inside Cat5e and Cat6; they aren't for jacketed cable, which is a job for the serrated edge or a splicing knife. Put the serrated blade on the side you want to hold still: it grips the cable so the cut is square rather than skating along the jacket. Kevlar dulls ordinary scissors fast, and the high carbon stainless blades hold up to it, but cutting Kevlar is still the hardest thing you'll ask of them, so keep the fiber strength members to the base of the blades where the leverage is. If the scissors start to fold wire over instead of cutting it, lift the hinge cap and tighten the adjustment screw a fraction; too tight and they'll be stiff, too loose and they'll fold. Stainless resists rust but isn't immune to it; wipe the blades after a wet day. The pouch covers the blades, which is the point of carrying scissors on a belt rather than loose in a pocket.
