Splicing a telephone pair at a terminal or a pedestal takes a crimper for the splice connector, a stripper for the conductor, a cutter for the slack, and a pair of pliers to reach the pair in the first place, and the Jonard Tools JIC-22148 puts all of them on one 6-7/8 in long nose plier. The crimper in the jaw presses UR, UY, and UG splice connectors such as the UR-25 and UY2-25, AMP Tel-Splice connectors, 709 series connectors, and B type connectors. A 0.030 in stripping hole strips 22 AWG wire, the side cutter trims it, a crusher flattens what needs flattening, and the long nose grips the wire and reaches into the tight spaces behind a terminal block. The pliers are heat-treated chrome vanadium steel with induction-hardened cutting edges that stay sharp through a career of copper, and the dipped plastic grips give comfort and torque on a crimp. Lifetime warranty.

Features

  • Five tools in one. Long nose plier, crimper, stripper, cutter, and crusher on one plier.
  • Crimps the common splice connectors. UR, UY, and UG connectors (UR-25, UY2-25), AMP Tel-Splice connectors, 709 series connectors, and B type connectors.
  • 0.030 in stripping hole. Strips 22 AWG wire.
  • Side cutter and crusher. Trim the conductor and crush where the job calls for it.
  • Chrome vanadium steel, induction-hardened edges. Heat treated for strength and durability.
  • Dipped plastic grips. Comfort and torque in the hand.
  • Lifetime warranty.

Where It Fits

It suits telephone installers and techs splicing copper pairs at the pedestal, the terminal, and the NID, outside plant crews repairing drops and cross-connects with UR and UY connectors, inside wiring techs extending a line to a new jack with B connectors, alarm and intercom installers splicing 22 AWG station wire, central office and MDU technicians who'd rather carry one plier on the belt than three tools in a pouch, anyone who has reached for the crimper and found it in the truck, and a belt that already has the punch-down tool and the butt set. For 110 and 66 block terminations the punch-down tools cover that side of the job, and the KN-200INS sheathing knife opens the cable the pairs come out of.

Good to Know

Match the connector to the crimp nest before you squeeze; UR, UY, UG, Tel-Splice, 709, and B connectors each seat in the jaw, and a connector crimped in the wrong spot is either loose or crushed. Slide the conductors fully into the connector, then crimp once with firm pressure rather than twice lightly, since the second crimp doesn't fix the first. The 0.030 in hole is sized for 22 AWG; 24 AWG station wire strips with it too if you're careful, but a heavier conductor needs a different stripper, and the hole is a stripper, not a cutter, so pull the insulation off rather than twisting the plier. Use the side cutter for the slack and the long nose for reaching and gripping, not for twisting a stubborn connector, since the nose is the tool's thin end. Confirm the pair is dead and disconnected from any line voltage or ringing current before you strip it; the grips are for comfort and torque, not insulation, and this is not a rated insulated tool. Wipe the tool dry after a wet pedestal and oil the joint now and then; chrome vanadium resists rust but doesn't ignore it.
