A technician who doesn't know which connector the next job will call for needs a compression tool that doesn't care. The Jonard Tools TK-85 COAX Tool Kit is the CATV service kit built around that tool, the CT-200 Universal Compression Tool, which handles connectors for RG59, RG6, RG7, and RG11 cable, and surrounds it with the rest of the work: the UST-125 stripper for the same four cable sizes, the TWAF-71630 full-head 7/16 in torque wrench preset to 30 in-lb, the PT-300 pocket continuity tester and toner with voltage detection, 8 in high leverage diagonal cutters, a 6-in-1 multi-bit screwdriver, and an LED zoom flashlight, each in its pocket in the molded H-85 pouch, at three and a half pounds. It's one of five matching coax kits that differ only in the compression tool, and the one to pick when the route runs from RG59 to RG11 and the connector spec changes by the job.
What's in the Kit
- CT-200 Universal Compression Tool. Compression connectors for RG59, RG6, RG7, and RG11 cable in one tool.
- UST-125 COAX Stripping Tool. Strips RG59, RG6, RG7, and RG11 for the connector.
- TWAF-71630 F Connector Torque Wrench. Full head, 7/16 in, preset to 30 in-lb, so every connector is tight enough to seal and not tight enough to strip the port.
- PT-300 Pocket Continuity Tester and Toner. Continuity check, tone for tracing a cable, and voltage detection.
- JIC-2288 High Leverage Diagonal Cutting Pliers, 8 in. Cuts coax, zip ties, and wire to length.
- SD-61 6-in-1 Multi-Bit Screwdriver. Phillips and slotted tips for wall plates, ground blocks, and splitter screws.
- FL-2000 LED Flashlight with Zoom Lens. For the crawlspace, the attic, and behind the equipment.
- H-85 Molded 7-Pocket Tool Pouch. A pocket for each tool, so a missing one shows before you leave the site.
Where It Fits
It suits CATV and broadband technicians whose route covers everything from RG59 camera runs to RG11 trunk and who'd rather carry one compression tool than guess, MDU and commercial crews that meet RG11 risers and RG6 drops in the same building, contractors working for several operators with different connector specs, service techs who don't know what cable is in the wall until it's open, companies outfitting a fleet with one kit that covers the whole coax range, and anyone who has shown up with the short-connector kit on an RG11 day. If the connector style is fixed and known, the TK-83 (short), TK-82 (long), TK-78 (360° short and long on RG59/6), or TK-87 (dual short and long with an RG6/RG11 head) are the same kit with a more specialized compression tool.
Good to Know
Universal means the CT-200 covers the cable sizes; it doesn't mean every connector on the market compresses correctly in it, so check the connector against the tool's compatibility list and the connector maker's compressed length before the first termination on a new brand. The order of work is the order of the pouch: check the line for voltage with the PT-300 before cutting anything, since a drop can carry power to an amplifier, then cut, strip to the connector maker's dimensions with the UST-125, compress with the CT-200, and finish with the torque wrench rather than pliers, because a 7/16 in F connector tightened past 30 in-lb strips the port and one left finger-tight lets water in. A finished connector should have a fully driven sleeve with no gap, a straight center conductor standing proud of the face by the maker's dimension, and no play on the cable; one that compressed with no resistance usually means the cable wasn't pushed in far enough, and on stiff RG11 that's easy to do. The PT-300 checks continuity and finds a cable with its tone; it isn't a signal level meter, and a line that passes continuity can still be out of spec. The diagonal cutters are for cable and wire, not screws or steel strand. Keep the strip dimensions card for the connectors you use in the pouch; with a universal tool the prep is what varies between brands and sizes.
