A technician who only ever fits short F connectors doesn't need a dual-head tool, a rotatable head, or a plunger to flip; a fixed tool that does one connector style every time is simpler, lighter, and has nothing to set wrong. The Jonard Tools TK-83 COAX Tool Kit is built around that tool, the CTF-300 fixed compression tool for short style F connectors, and surrounds it with the rest of a CATV service kit: the UST-125 stripper for RG59, RG6, RG7, and RG11, the TWAF-71630 full-head 7/16 in torque wrench preset to 30 in-lb, the PT-300 pocket continuity tester and toner with voltage detection, 8 in high leverage diagonal cutters, a 6-in-1 multi-bit screwdriver, and an LED zoom flashlight, each in its pocket in the molded H-85 pouch, at three and a half pounds. It's the same kit as the TK-78 and TK-87 with a different compression tool at the center: fixed short here, 360° short-and-long in the TK-78, dual short-and-long with an RG11 head in the TK-87.

Where It Fits

It suits CATV and broadband technicians whose operator specifies short F connectors and nothing else, so a fixed tool is the right tool, indoor service and MDU work where the short connector at the wall plate and the splitter is the whole job, security camera installers terminating RG59 and RG6 with short connectors to cameras and recorders, contractors and new hires who need a matched coax set from one maker and don't want a setting to get wrong, and companies standardizing a fleet on one connector style. If long connectors are part of the route, the TK-78 has the CTF-180 for short and long on RG59 and RG6; if RG11 is too, the TK-87 has the CTF-230 with its RG6/RG11 head.

Good to Know

The CTF-300 is for short style F connectors and nothing else, which is the point of a fixed tool and also its limit: a long connector put in it won't compress to its length, and the gap shows up as a leak later. Check the connector style before the kit goes on the truck for a job, and go to the TK-78 or TK-87 if long or RG11 connectors are on the work order. The order of work is the order of the pouch: check the line for voltage with the PT-300 before cutting anything, since a drop can carry power to an amplifier, then cut, strip to the connector maker's dimensions with the UST-125, compress with the CTF-300, and finish with the torque wrench rather than pliers, because a 7/16 in F connector tightened past 30 in-lb strips the port and one left finger-tight lets water in. A finished connector should have a fully driven sleeve with no gap, a straight center conductor standing proud of the face by the maker's dimension, and no play on the cable; one that compressed with no resistance usually means the cable wasn't pushed in far enough. The PT-300 checks continuity and finds a cable with its tone; it isn't a signal level meter, and a line that passes continuity can still be out of spec. The diagonal cutters are for cable and wire, not screws or steel strand. Keep the strip dimensions card for the connectors you use in the pouch.
