After hardline is cored, there's a film of dielectric left on the center conductor, and it has to come off before the connector goes on or the pin won't make a clean contact. A knife takes it off and leaves a scratch that becomes a hot spot; the Jonard Tools CC-120 takes it off with plastic blades that can't. It's a center conductor cleaner for distribution and trunk coax, with a body molded from high-strength glass-filled Lexan and blades made of polycarbonate, so the blade is always softer than the copper and the conductor comes out clean with no nick or scratch. It works on any hardline cable, comes with a set of flat blades installed and a second pair of saw-tooth blades in the box, and takes CC-4 replacement blades when the set wears. It's under five inches and weighs two ounces, so it rides in the same pocket as the coring tool.

Good to Know

Core first, clean second: the coring tool removes the bulk of the dielectric and the cleaner takes off the film and the ring of residue it leaves at the shoulder. Close the cleaner on the conductor and rotate it a few turns with light pressure, then draw it off the end; the plastic blades do the work by scraping, not cutting, so pressing hard just wears them faster. Use the flat blades for ordinary cleaning and switch to the saw-tooth pair when the dielectric is baked on or the cable is older and the residue is stubborn. Inspect the conductor after cleaning: it should be bright and uniform with no dielectric left at the shoulder and no scoring, which the plastic blades can't make but a previous knife might have. Change to the spare set, or to CC-4 replacements, when the blades stop clearing the residue in a few turns. The cleaner is for the center conductor; it doesn't core, strip, or bevel, which is the coring tool's job. Hardline on a CATV plant carries AC power to amplifiers; the cleaner's plastic body isn't a reason to skip confirming the line is dead before the connector comes off.
