Stripping or slitting coax takes two hands on the tool and a third on the cable, which is why the cable twists in the stripper and the strip comes out spiraled. The Jonard Tools CG-100 is the third hand: a soft rubber pad that conforms to the cable and holds it tight while you work, so the stripper, the slitter, or the splice gets a cable that stays put. Two gripping grooves cover 3 to 6 mm and 6 to 12 mm diameters, which takes in RG59, RG6, RG7, RG11, and most other cable in that range, and the pad is small enough to go on a belt through its loop hole and forget until the next strip. It weighs just over an ounce.

Good to Know

Put the cable in the groove that matches its diameter, 3 to 6 mm or 6 to 12 mm, and close the pad around it; a cable in the wrong groove either isn't held or is squeezed flat, and a flattened jacket makes a bad strip. Hold the pad with the cable a short distance from the end you're working so the stripper or the slitter has room, and keep the grip steady rather than tight, since the soft rubber holds by conforming and squeezing harder does nothing but tire the hand. Rotate the stripper around the cable, not the cable in the pad. The pad grips jacket; it isn't a vise, a strain relief, or a cable pulling grip, and it isn't for bare conductor or for holding a cable under tension. Wipe it clean of gel and dust, since a slippery pad doesn't grip, and keep it away from solvents that soften rubber. Check that a cable isn't live before working on it; the pad is rubber but it isn't rated as insulation.
