The Jonard Tools Cable Mapper Pro is three tools in one rubber-armored handset: a cable mapper that identifies up to eight coax or network runs at once, a tester that checks coax for opens and shorts and network and telephone cable for opens, shorts, split pairs, reversed pairs, and crossed pairs, and a tone generator for finding a cable in a wiring closet or at a patch panel. It reads out on a backlit LCD, maps runs up to 1,000 ft long, and warns of live voltage on a line before you connect to it. The kit comes complete in a rugged nylon case with eight coax identifiers, eight network identifiers, a network cable remote, the patch cords to connect it all, and the two AA batteries it runs on, so it's ready to work out of the box on CATV and satellite feeds, structured cabling, security and alarm wiring, phone systems, CCTV, and audio and video runs.

Good to Know

Mapping and testing are two different jobs. For mapping, the numbered identifiers go on the far ends of up to eight cables and the handset reads back the number of whichever cable it's plugged into; for the full wiring test on a network or phone cable, the network cable remote goes on the far end and the handset checks each pair. The tone generator needs a tone probe to hear it; the probe isn't included, so add one if you don't already carry it. Live voltage detection is a warning, not a measurement: if the handset flags voltage on a line, find out what's feeding it before you go further, and don't test cable that's connected to live equipment. The tester works on cable with a loop resistance up to 100 Ω, which covers ordinary runs to the 1,000 ft rating; a very long or very thin cable can exceed that and fail to read even if it's sound. A pass on this tester means the conductors are connected and in the right order, which is what a field check needs; it doesn't certify Cat5e or Cat6 performance, and a certifier is the tool for that. It runs on two AA cells, included, and switches itself off after 30 minutes, so a dead handset in the case usually means it's been sitting for a while rather than that the batteries are flat.
