CAT6 CMX/CMR Dual-Rated Cable 1000ft - Shielded, 23AWG Solid Copper

This is the shielded Cat6 that runs from the outdoor camera all the way to the patch panel in one piece. Most outdoor cable is CMX rated, which the NEC limits to 50 feet inside a building, so a normal outdoor run has to stop at the wall and splice to indoor cable. This one carries both a CMX outdoor rating and a CMR riser rating, so it can come in through the wall, up a riser, and across a ceiling to the closet without a splice or a transition box. The jacket is UV-resistant PVC, the material that earns the riser rating, with additives to hold up to sun and heat. Inside, an aluminum-mylar foil with a tinned copper drain wire blocks interference from power sharing the route.

Underneath are 23 AWG solid bare copper conductors with HDPE insulation, a size up from Cat5e, which is where Cat6 gets its lower loss and its headroom for 2.5G and 5G links. It comes on a 1000 ft wooden spool with a rip cord and footage markings on the jacket.

• F/UTP overall foil shield with tinned copper drain wire. It blocks EMI and RFI from power lines, lighting, and equipment, and the tinned drain resists corrosion outdoors.
• 23 AWG solid bare copper. Heavier than Cat5e's 24 AWG, for lower resistance over a full 100 m channel and less voltage drop on PoE runs. No copper-clad aluminum.
• Gigabit and multi-gig rated. It runs 10/100/1000 Mbps, 2.5G, and 5G links over a full channel, and 10GBase-T over short runs.
• UV-resistant PVC jacket. Sun-blocking additives keep it from cracking or chalking in direct sun, across a -20 °C to 60 °C operating range.
• HDPE insulation. Moisture-resistant, with tight pair twists for crosstalk control.
• Rip cord. Strip the jacket without nicking the foil or the conductors.
• Sequential footage markings. Measure runs and track what's left.
• 1000 ft wooden spool. Standard TIA-568 pair colors inside for easy termination.

Where It Fits

It suits security cameras and access points mounted on the outside of a building and cabled straight back to the closet, rooftop equipment with a run down through a riser, runs that go outdoors for a stretch between two parts of the same building, covered walkways, loading docks, and parking structures, and any multi-gig install where a separate outdoor-to-indoor transition would add a splice point and a junction box.

Good to Know

Outdoor cable brings lightning and surge risk into the building with it, and a cable that runs straight to the patch panel needs a surge protector even more than one that stops at the wall. Put a gas-discharge Ethernet surge protector at the entry point, bonded to the building ground, and ground the shield's drain wire at one end. CMR covers risers and general indoor spaces but not plenum air-handling ceilings; if the indoor portion crosses a plenum, transition to CMP there. This cable isn't rated for direct burial; for runs that go underground, use a polyethylene-jacketed burial cable or conduit. Cat6 carries 10G over short distances only; for 10G on a full channel, use Cat6A. A shield only works when it's grounded, so terminate on shielded Cat6 jacks and patch panels. Install it above freezing; PVC stiffens in the cold, so in winter warm the spool indoors before pulling. Solid conductors are for permanent runs; terminate on jacks and patch panels, not crimped plugs.
