Cat6 Shielded Keystone Jack, 110 Punch Down (KEY6-SHD)

A shielded Cat6 cable terminated to an unshielded jack is shielded all the way to the last inch, which is to say it isn't. This shielded Cat6 keystone jack finishes the run properly: a 110-type IDC jack in a metal housing that carries the cable's shield through the jack to the plug on the other side, so the EMI protection the cable was specified for holds across the whole channel. It terminates with a standard punch-down tool on 90 degree 110 IDC contacts, with the T568A and T568B color codes printed on the jack so the pairs land right without a reference card, and it snaps into any standard keystone opening in a wall plate, surface box, or patch panel. Inside, the IDC contacts are phosphor bronze, the plug contacts are brass with 50 microinches of gold over nickel, and the housing and PCB are both UL 94 V-0 flame rated. It's rated for PoE++ at up to 100 W under 802.3bt, and a shielded wire dust cap is included. It's the shielded member of the economy jack line, and the COU6-SHD is the matching shielded coupler.

Good to Know

A shield only works when it's bonded: the jack's metal housing carries the cable's foil or braid through to the plug, and the channel has to be grounded at one end, usually through a bonded shielded patch panel, so make sure the panel end is grounded and the drain wire or foil is captured by the jack's housing when you terminate; a shielded jack floating in a plastic wall plate with no path to ground still carries the shield but doesn't drain it. Strip the jacket far enough to fold the shield back onto the jacket where the housing clamps it, keep the pair untwist short, and punch each conductor down on the 110 contact with a 110 blade in one firm stroke, cut side out, matching the color to the A or B label on the jack; use one standard, the same as the rest of the building. The 100 W PoE++ rating is the jack's; the channel still needs cable and a panel rated for it, and 4PPoE at 100 W in a bundle wants cable sized for the heat. The dust cap goes on after termination to protect the IDC field and the shield fold. Shielding reduces interference, it doesn't eliminate it, so a run that's noisy with shielded jacks has a grounding problem or an unshielded component somewhere in it. Count the jack as a connection in the channel budget, and keep it indoors; it's not a weatherproof part.
