This is the Cat6 for the spaces above drop ceilings and below raised floors that double as return air paths for the building's HVAC. Cable in those plenums has to be CMP rated, because in a fire the air handling system would carry smoke from burning cable through the whole building. This cable's FEP-insulated conductors and low-smoke, flame-retardant jacket are what earn that rating and its ETL Listing. The 23 AWG solid copper conductors are a size up from Cat5e, which is where Cat6 gets its lower loss and its headroom for 2.5G and 5G links.

It comes in a 1000 ft pull box with footage markings on the jacket.

Features

• CMP plenum rated, ETL Listed. Approved for ceiling and floor plenums, and for every other indoor space too, since CMP is the highest rating in the family.
• 23 AWG solid bare copper. Heavier than Cat5e's 24 AWG, for lower resistance over a full 100 m channel and less voltage drop on PoE runs. No copper-clad aluminum.
• Gigabit and multi-gig rated. It runs 10/100/1000 Mbps, 2.5G, and 5G links over a full channel, and 10GBase-T over short runs.
• FEP insulation. Fluoropolymer insulation is what lets the cable pass the plenum flame and smoke tests.
• Low-smoke FR-PVC jacket. It resists flame spread and gives off little smoke if it burns.
• Unshielded (UTP). No shield means no grounding to worry about and the easiest cable to terminate.
• Sequential footage markings. You can see what's left in the box and cut runs to length without a tape.
• 1000 ft pull box. The cable pays out from the center without twisting or tangling.
• Seven jacket colors. Standard TIA-568 pair colors inside.

Where It Fits

It suits horizontal runs through ceiling and raised-floor plenums in offices, schools, hospitals, and retail buildings, Wi-Fi 6 access points and PoE cameras in commercial space, VoIP and workstation drops where the building spec calls for Cat6, and any plenum installation that needs headroom beyond Gigabit.

Good to Know

Plenum-rated cable is for plenum spaces, not for the inside of HVAC ducts; the NEC doesn't allow communications cable inside ducts built to carry air. If you're not sure whether a ceiling is a plenum, ask the building engineer or the AHJ before pulling. Cat6 carries 10G over short distances only; for 10G on a full channel, use Cat6A. FEP-insulated 23 AWG cable is stiffer than Cat5e, so respect the bend radius, about four times the cable diameter, and use Cat6-rated jacks and patch panels, since the thicker conductor won't seat properly in Cat5e hardware. Solid conductors are for permanent runs; terminate on jacks and patch panels, not crimped plugs.
