CAT5e CMP Plenum Cable 1000ft - UL Listed, 24AWG Solid Copper UTP

This is the Cat5e for the spaces above drop ceilings and below raised floors that double as return air paths for the building's HVAC. Cable in those plenums has to be CMP rated, because in a fire the air handling system would carry smoke from burning cable through the whole building. This cable's FEP-insulated conductors and low-smoke, flame-retardant jacket are what earn that rating and its UL Listing, and it's the cable an inspector expects to see when they lift a ceiling tile in a commercial building.

Underneath, it's a Category 5e cable rated for Gigabit Ethernet, with 24 AWG solid bare copper conductors. It comes in a 1000 ft pull box with footage markings on the jacket.

Features

• CMP plenum rated, UL Listed. Approved for ceiling and floor plenums, and for every other indoor space too, since CMP is the highest rating in the family.
• FEP insulation. Fluoropolymer insulation is what lets the cable pass the plenum flame and smoke tests, and it's thinner than HDPE, so the cable is slimmer.
• Low-smoke FR-PVC jacket. It resists flame spread and gives off little smoke if it burns.
• 24 AWG solid bare copper. Full-gauge solid conductors for the lowest loss over a full 100 m channel, and no copper-clad aluminum.
• Gigabit rated. It runs 10/100/1000 Mbps links, and 2.5GBase-T on equipment that supports it.
• Unshielded (UTP). No shield means no grounding to worry about and the easiest cable to terminate.
• Sequential footage markings. You can see what's left in the box and cut runs to length without a tape.
• 1000 ft pull box. The cable pays out from the center without twisting or tangling.
• Nine jacket colors. Standard TIA-568 pair colors inside.

Where It Fits

It suits horizontal runs through ceiling and raised-floor plenums in offices, schools, hospitals, and retail buildings, VoIP phone and access point drops in commercial space, camera and security cabling above suspended ceilings, and any building where the spec or the inspector calls for plenum cable.

Good to Know

Plenum-rated cable is for plenum spaces, not for the inside of HVAC ducts; the NEC doesn't allow communications cable inside ducts built to carry air. If you're not sure whether a ceiling is a plenum, ask the building engineer or the AHJ before pulling; using CMP where CMR would do costs more, but using CMR in a plenum fails inspection. FEP-insulated cable is stiffer than HDPE cable, so respect the bend radius, about four times the cable diameter. Solid conductors are for permanent runs; terminate on jacks and patch panels, not crimped plugs.
