Not every jacket strip needs a tool with a depth knob. For ordinary indoor Cat5, Cat5e, and Cat6 cable with a PVC jacket, this stripper takes the jacket off with no calibration and no blade setup: the mechanism adjusts itself to the cable's diameter, anywhere from 0.18 to 0.25 in (4.5 to 6.3 mm), so a technician switching from Cat5e drops to Cat6 patch cord just inserts the next cable and strips. The blade is set to cut the jacket and stop before the pairs, which keeps the inner conductors from being nicked, and the stripping depth comes out the same on every cable. The blade is steel, the housing is bright yellow high-impact plastic that shrugs off drops and is easy to find on a jobsite, and the price makes it easy to keep one in every pouch.

The range is 0.18 to 0.25 in (4.5 to 6.3 mm) outside diameter on standard indoor PVC jackets, and that's the whole story: outdoor cable, direct-burial cable, and thicker shielded Cat6 jackets are outside it, and so is most Cat6A, which runs larger. A cable that's too big won't seat or won't strip cleanly, and one that's too small can let the blade reach the pairs. Insert the cable square, rotate the tool around it with steady pressure, and pull the slug off straight; strip only as much jacket as the jack or the connector needs, since the untwisted length behind the termination is what costs you on a test. Look at the first strip on a new cable type for any mark on the pair insulation; the tool is designed not to nick, but a cable at the edge of the range can. It strips the outer jacket only; the pair insulation is handled by the jack or the connector, and it isn't a tool for coax or power cable. Keep the slot clear of jacket crumbs so the cable seats properly. The blade is steel and it's a blade; keep fingers out of the slot.
