The Jonard Tools TETP-800 is the two-piece kit for finding a wire: the TET-600 puts a tone on a cable, a pair, or a single conductor through its RJ11 plug or alligator clips, and the TEP-100 probe picks that tone out of a bundle, a punch-down block, or a wall from up to 1.86 miles away, with a plastic tip that can't short the contacts it touches and a volume knob to work quietly or cut through a noisy closet. The tone generator also checks continuity and reads the polarity of a telephone line, so one kit handles the three questions a voice, data, or alarm tech asks most: which cable is this, is it connected end to end, and is tip and ring the right way round. Both units are ETL Listed, the probe works with other makers' analog toners and the toner with other probes, and the two 9 V batteries they run on are in the box.
What's in the Kit
- TET-600 cable tester and toner. Sends tone through the built-in RJ11 connector or the alligator clips, tests cable continuity, and checks the polarity of telephone lines. Independently tested to meet ETL Listed standards. One 9 V battery included.
- TEP-100 tone tracing probe. Plastic probe tip prevents accidental shorts on the contacts you touch; adjustable volume knob to work silently or to hear the tone more easily. Works with the TET-600 and with many other manufacturers' analog tone generators. Independently tested to meet ETL Listed standards. One 9 V battery included.
Where It Fits
It suits VDV technicians identifying unlabeled cables at a patch panel, a 66 or 110 block, or a wall plate, telephone installers checking a line for continuity and polarity before the handset goes on, security and alarm techs tracing a zone wire back to the panel, maintenance staff finding where a run goes through a ceiling or a wall, and anyone who already owns a toner or a probe from another maker and wants a matching second half that works with it.
Good to Know
Tone and trace is for finding a cable, not for testing a network: the tester confirms continuity and telephone polarity, and a wiring-map tester or a certifier is the tool for Cat5e and Cat6 pair faults and performance. Put the tone on at the far end and probe at the near end, and start with the volume down and raise it until the loudest spot is clear; the strongest tone is the cable you want, and the ones next to it will carry a fainter copy. Analog tone bleeds between pairs in a bundle, so when two cables sound alike, separate them and probe again rather than guessing. Use the alligator clips on bare conductors or a punch-down block and the RJ11 plug on a jack; on a live telephone line, the tester is designed to read polarity, but check for anything beyond telephone voltage before you clip onto an unknown pair. The probe's plastic tip is what lets you touch contacts without shorting them; keep it on. It doesn't test coax, and it doesn't detect AC voltage, which is the VT-1100 pen's job. Both units run on 9 V batteries, included; a probe that reads nothing on a known-toned cable usually means the battery, not the cable.
