Thick-jacketed, high-count cable such as Corning RocketRibbon is opened at mid-span by shaving a window in the jacket rather than slitting it, taking the sheath off in a strip while the ribbons underneath stay untouched, and that takes a tool with a sharp blade and a controlled angle. The Jonard Tools RRS-1222 is the cable shaving tool for armored and non-armored RocketRibbon and other thick-jacketed cable from 12 to 22 mm (0.47 to 0.87 in) in diameter. An ultra-sharp SK5 steel blade slices through the jacket, an adjustable guide sets the blade's cutting angle to the jacket size so the depth is right for the cable in hand, and the ergonomic handle gives the leverage a long shave along a heavy sheath needs. The steel construction is built for a long life on the job, and when the blade dulls it swaps for an RRS-1222RB replacement.

Features

  • Shaves access windows in 12 to 22 mm cable. Made for Corning RocketRibbon, armored and non-armored, and other thick-jacketed cable in the same range.
  • Ultra-sharp SK5 steel blade. Slices through thick jackets with ease.
  • Adjustable guide. Changes the blade's cutting angle for different jacket sizes, so the shave takes the sheath and not what's under it.
  • Ergonomic handle with leverage. Shaped to give extra leverage on the pull along a heavy jacket.
  • Steel construction. Rugged and durable for long life.
  • Replaceable blade. RRS-1222RB replacement blades sold separately.

Where It Fits

It suits data center and hyperscale fiber crews doing mid-span entries on RocketRibbon trunks between halls and at splice points, central office and long-haul splicing teams opening high-count ribbon cable for closures, contractors who have standardized on RocketRibbon and want the tool Jonard built for its jacket rather than a general-purpose slitter, anyone opening armored RocketRibbon, where the shave has to go through the armor and stop, and a splicing kit that already has the MS-836 for ringing and slitting RocketRibbon and needs the shaving tool for the window.

Good to Know

Measure the cable's outside diameter and set the guide for it before the first cut; the guide sets the blade angle, and the angle is what decides how deep the shave goes, so a setting from a smaller cable on a larger one cuts into the ribbons. Make a test shave at the cable end or on a scrap, check the depth, and adjust before the live cut. Ring the cable at both ends of the window first (the MS-836 does that on RocketRibbon), then shave between the rings in long, steady strokes with the handle, keeping the guide flat on the jacket; short choppy strokes leave steps in the window and a tilted guide changes the depth mid-stroke. On armored cable, the shave has to clear the armor and stop at the inner jacket or the ribbons; check the first stroke before continuing, and wear gloves, since cut armor is sharp. Lift the shaved strip away and look at the ribbons for scoring before you go further. Swap in an RRS-1222RB when the blade starts to drag or tear rather than slice, which is when it wanders; a blade this sharp is also one to cap and keep in the kit, not loose in a pocket. For cable below 12 mm or above 22 mm the shaving tool isn't the one; the MS-series mid-span tools and the AST-200 CableSaber cover the rest of the range.
