Pulling cable up through a drop ceiling drags the jacket across the sharp edge of the grid, and pulling hard enough to get it through twists the grid and chews the tile edge. The Jonard Tools CPF-215 Cable Funnel is a smooth plastic ring that clips onto a standard 1 in ceiling grid at the corner where the cable comes up, so the cable rides over a rounded, low-friction surface instead of bare metal. It protects any type of cable, coax, Cat5e/6, fiber, or speaker wire alike, from being damaged during the pull, keeps the ceiling from being twisted or marred, and makes the pull itself easier because there's less to catch on. A side slit lets it go on and come off without threading the cable through it, and a removal fin gives you something to grab when the pull is done; the 3.7 in inner diameter passes a good-sized bundle at a time.

Good to Know

Put the funnel on before the pull starts, at the grid corner where the cable turns up or changes direction, since that's where the jacket takes the wear; the side slit means it goes on around a cable that's already in place. It fits the standard 1 in grid; a 9/16 in narrow-profile grid or a concealed-spline ceiling is a different fit. Seat it fully so it can't shift mid-pull, pull steadily rather than in jerks, and keep the cable centered in the 3.7 in opening instead of riding the edge of the slit. Use the removal fin to take it off; prying the ring over the grid is how the plastic cracks. It protects the cable from the grid, not from the pull itself, so stay within the cable's pulling tension and bend radius, and a pull that still feels tight has a snag elsewhere in the ceiling. Keep it clean, since drywall dust and old insulation on a smooth surface stop being smooth, and leave the tile out until the pull is done rather than cutting around the funnel.
