Cat6A and Cat7 are fatter than the cable most combs were cut for, and two dozen of them pulled through a ceiling arrive as a heavier tangle than a Cat5e bundle ever did. The Jonard Tools CCB-34 Cable Comb® is the large-cable version of the comb: load the cables into the green inner hub, slide the blue outer collar forward to close it, and draw the comb along the bundle so the cables come out parallel and ready to lash. It holds up to 24 cables of 0.36 in diameter or less in 15 slots, which takes Cat5e through Cat6A, Cat7, Cat7A, and Cat8 network cable as well as coax, plenum, control, speaker, and alarm cables and wires, and it does it without threading the cable ends: a cable goes into the hub at any point during the job, and comes out at any point by sliding the collar back. The body is Zytel® nylon, tough enough for the truck and slick enough to glide over the jackets. For cables up to 1/4 in, the CCB-25 is the same comb with the smaller orange hub.
Features
- Cables up to 0.36 in (9.14 mm). Coax (not RG6 Quad), plenum, control, Cat5e/5/6/6A/7/7A/8 network, speaker, and alarm cables and wires.
- Holds up to 24 cables. Fifteen slots in a 4.9 in (124.5 mm) hub.
- Load at any point. The design takes an individual cable into the hub partway through the job without threading the cable's end.
- Remove at any point. Slide the blue outer collar back to release cables.
- Zytel® nylon. Durable and smooth on the cable jackets.
Where It Fits
It suits structured cabling installers dressing Cat6A bundles into a rack or a patch panel on a 10 Gigabit build, data center techs combing Cat7 and Cat8 runs between cabinets, low-voltage technicians pulling coax, control, and alarm cable through ceilings and walls on the same run, AV and home theater integrators routing speaker wire and shielded network cable together behind an equipment rack, security and fire alarm contractors keeping a multi-cable home run neat enough to label, anyone whose Cat6A bundle wouldn't fit the comb they already own, and a tool bag that already has the cable ties and the lacing cord. For Cat5e, Cat6, and other cables up to 1/4 in, the CCB-25 is the standard comb; the CPF-215 Cable Funnel protects the pull at the ceiling grid, and the ST-500 and ST-550 strippers and the copper tool kits cover the terminations at the end of it.
Good to Know
The 0.36 in limit is per cable, not per bundle, and RG6 Quad is specifically excluded, since the extra shield layers push it past the slots; a cable that has to be forced into a slot is too big for it, and a thin cable in a wide slot wanders, so a Cat5e bundle is better combed in the CCB-25. Fill the hub evenly rather than loading one side, so the comb pulls straight and the bundle comes out round. Comb from the fixed end toward the loose end in long strokes and let the nylon do the work; a comb that catches has a cable crossed in the hub, so back the collar off, straighten it, and close the collar again. Shielded Cat6A, Cat7, and Cat8 have a minimum bend radius worth respecting while you comb, so straighten the bundle rather than bending it around the tool. Load and unload with the collar, not by prying the hub, and keep the collar closed while pulling so nothing drops out mid-run. It's a dressing tool, not a pulling tool, so don't use it to haul the bundle through a conduit or ceiling. Wipe the hub out if it picks up drywall dust or pulling lubricant, since grit in the slots is what ends up scuffing the cables.
