An F connector in a crowded house box or on a busy tap gives a wrench a few degrees of swing per stroke, and a plain 7/16 in wrench spends most of the job being lifted off and reset. The Jonard Tools ASW-R716 is a 7/16 in ratcheting speed wrench built to skip that: the patented speed head on the open end gets onto an F connector, nut, or bolt where there's little room to approach it, and the ratcheting box end on the other side has 12 points of contact, so it turns in a short arc and grips the hex for maximum torque without rounding it. The wrench is chrome vanadium steel with a polished chrome plating, 6-1/2 in long and under three ounces, which is the size that lives in a pouch rather than a toolbox. It's the ratcheting member of the 7/16 in speed wrench family; the ASW-716 and stubby ASWS-716 are the angled double-ended versions, and the ASW-R12 is the same ratcheting wrench in 1/2 in.

Features

  • Patented speed head. Easy access to connectors, nuts, and bolts in tight spaces.
  • 12-point ratcheting box end. Twelve points of contact for maximum torque in a short swing.
  • 7/16 in size. For 7/16 in F connectors, nuts, and bolts.
  • Chrome vanadium steel, chrome plated. Maximum strength and durability, with a polished chrome finish.

Where It Fits

It suits CATV and broadband technicians working F connectors at the tap, the ground block, the splitter, and the wall plate, satellite and MDU installers running down a row of ports on a multiswitch or a lock box, audit and disconnect crews who tighten and loosen dozens of connectors a day and want the ratchet to do the resetting, anyone who has rounded an F connector with an adjustable wrench or skinned a knuckle on the port next to it, and a pouch that already has the SST-716 security shield tool, the TT-series terminator tools, and the TWAF-71630 torque wrench for setting the final torque. For a port the ratchet can't reach, the 15 degree ASW-716 or the 4 in stubby ASWS-716; for 1/2 in hardware around the connector, the ASW-R12.

Good to Know

Match the wrench to the hex: 7/16 in fits standard F connectors, and a 9/16 in RG11 connector or a 1/2 in nut needs its own wrench, since a loose fit rounds the corners even with 12 points. Use the box end for torque and the speed head for getting on and off and for the first and last turns; the box end's 12 points grip best when the wrench is fully seated and square to the connector, so push it on before you pull. A ratchet turns one way at a time, so flip the wrench over to change direction, and don't extend the handle; 6-1/2 in of chrome vanadium is more leverage than an F connector wants, which is the next point. It's a speed wrench, not a torque wrench; it gets a connector on and snug, and a connector with a torque spec, which is every F connector on a plant, gets final tightening with a torque wrench set to the maker's figure, since over-tightening is how a port's threads strip and a connector's seal fails. Chrome plating resists rust but flakes if the wrench is used as a hammer or a pry. Keep the ratchet clean and give it a drop of light oil now and then, and wipe the tool dry after a wet job. Tap ports on a powered plant can be live; check before working at the tap.
