A wire stripper with fixed gauge holes is right for the sizes it has and wrong for everything between, and the Jonard Tools WS-5 takes a different approach: a precision-ground V-notch blade and an adjustable blade stop that set to any wire size from 10 to 30 AWG (2.6 to 0.25 mm), solid or stranded. Turn the adjustment screw to the gauge, using the scored marks on the tool as a reference, and the stop keeps the blades from closing past the insulation, so the strip comes off clean without a nick in the conductor; the same jaws cut the wire. It's spring-loaded, with a locking latch that holds it closed in the pouch, a looping hole for bending a solid conductor into a terminal hook, high carbon steel with a black oxide coating, and vinyl cushion grips, at five inches and a sixth of a pound.

Good to Know

Set the screw for the wire before the first strip, then test on a scrap: if the insulation tears instead of slicing, open the stop a little; if the conductor shows a ring mark or a strand is cut, close it a little. On stranded wire set it slightly looser than on solid of the same gauge, since the strands sit loose in the insulation and a strand nicked at the strip is a strand that breaks at the terminal. The scored marks get you close; the scrap test gets you there. To strip, close the jaws on the wire at the strip length, rotate a quarter turn if the insulation is tough, and pull the slug off straight. Use the looping hole on solid conductor only; stranded wire looped by hand lays better under a screw. Cut with the same jaws, but keep the cut to 10 AWG and under; this is a stripper that cuts, not a cable cutter. The latch is what keeps the spring-loaded handles from opening in a pouch, so lock it before it goes in, and a drop of oil on the pivot now and then keeps the black oxide tool from stiffening. Check for voltage before you strip anything that may carry it; the vinyl grips are for comfort, not insulation.
