Most pulls in a building are short ones: a wall cavity, a run of conduit between two boxes, a stretch under carpet from the wall to the desk. The Jonard Tools FTS-50 is the fish tape sized for that work, 50 ft of high-strength spring steel tape, 1/8 in wide and 1/16 in thick, in a compact case built for easy pay-out and rewind. The tape is stiff enough for heavy-duty wire pulls through conduit, in walls, and under carpet, and the steel springs back straight instead of taking a set. Measurement markings are laser-etched at every foot, so you know how far the tape has gone and how much cable the run needs, and three viewing ports in the case show how much tape is left. Case and handle are high-impact plastic, rated to survive a drop from over two stories, which is to say a fall from a lift or a ladder onto concrete. At under two and a half pounds it lives in the tool bag rather than the truck. Lifetime warranty.
Features
- High-strength spring steel tape. Handles heavy-duty wire pulls with ease.
- 50 ft (15.24 m) of tape. Sized for wall, short conduit, and under-carpet pulls, in a case that fits the bag.
- Laser-etched every foot. Measurement markings at each foot (0.305 m) for reading distance and sizing the pull.
- High-impact plastic case and handle. Withstands drops from over two stories.
- Three viewing ports. Show how much tape is left in the case.
- Lifetime warranty.
Where It Fits
It suits electricians fishing a new circuit down a finished wall or between boxes on a short conduit run, structured cabling and low-voltage technicians pulling Cat6, coax, and speaker wire through walls and under carpet in an occupied office or home, AV and security installers who want a fish tape in every bag rather than one on the truck, home theater and smart-home integrators working behind drywall, service techs adding a drop where the 240 ft reel is more tape than the job, anyone who has carried the big reel up a ladder for a 20 ft pull, and a bag that already has the strippers and the cable comb. For long conduit runs, risers, and underground pulls between buildings, the FTS-240 is the same tape with 240 ft on the reel; for fishing anywhere a conductor might be live, the FTF-1125 non-conductive fiberglass tape is the one to reach for instead.
Good to Know
Steel conducts, so this tape never goes into a conduit, box, or panel that could be energized; confirm the circuit is dead before fishing it, and use the FTF-1125 fiberglass tape wherever that can't be guaranteed. Feed the tape with the reel rather than pulling loops of steel off by hand, since a spring steel tape that kinks over a sharp edge has a weak spot that will snap on a hard pull, and rewind it with the case so it lays in flat. Push steadily and back off when it stops; a tape jammed into a blockage, a fire block, or a tight coupling bends at the tip, and a bent tip is what hangs up on everything after that. Attach the pull string or cable to the tape end with a smooth, tapered wrap so the splice slides through, pull the tape out with the cable, and don't use the tape itself as the pulling line for a heavy cable. The foot markings read distance from the tip, so note the reading when the tape reaches the far box and add working slack to it; 50 ft covers most in-building pulls, but measure the run before you commit to the small reel on a long one. Wipe the tape dry after a wet conduit and give it a light oil now and then; spring steel rusts, and rust on a tape is grit in the next pull.
