A long conduit run needs a fish tape with enough reach to get there and enough backbone to push, and a reel that doesn't fight you on the rewind. The Jonard Tools FTS-240 is 240 ft of high-strength spring steel tape, 1/8 in wide and 1/16 in thick, in a case built for easy pay-out and rewind: the tape is stiff enough for heavy-duty wire pulls through conduit, in walls, and under carpet, and the steel springs back straight instead of taking a set. Measurement markings are laser-etched at every foot, so you know how far the tape has gone and how long the pull string needs to be before the cable goes in, and two viewing ports in the case show how much tape is left. Case and handle are high-impact plastic, rated to survive a drop from over two stories, which is to say a fall from a lift or a ladder onto concrete. Lifetime warranty.
Features
- High-strength spring steel tape. Handles heavy-duty wire pulls with ease.
- 240 ft (73.15 m) of tape. Enough reach for long conduit runs between pull points.
- Laser-etched every foot. Measurement markings at each foot (0.305 m) for reading distance and sizing the pull.
- High-impact plastic case and handle. Withstands drops from over two stories.
- Two viewing ports. Show how much tape is left in the case.
- Lifetime warranty.
Where It Fits
It suits electricians pulling branch circuits and feeders through long EMT and PVC runs, structured cabling crews fishing pull string through underground conduit between buildings or down a riser, low-voltage and security installers running coax and Cat6 through walls and under carpet in an occupied building, data center and telecom techs who need to measure a conduit run before cutting cable, anyone whose 50 ft tape has come up short at a pull box one too many times, and a truck that already carries the CC-5442 cable caddy to pay the cable out and the CPF-215 Cable Funnel to protect it at the ceiling. For fishing anywhere a conductor might be live, the FTF-1125 non-conductive fiberglass tape is the one to reach for instead.
Good to Know
Steel conducts, so this tape never goes into a conduit, box, or panel that could be energized; confirm the circuit is dead before fishing it, and use the FTF-1125 fiberglass tape wherever that can't be guaranteed. Feed the tape with the reel rather than pulling loops of steel off by hand, since a spring steel tape that kinks over a sharp edge has a weak spot that will snap on a hard pull, and rewind it with the case so it lays in flat. Push steadily and back off when it stops; a tape jammed into a blockage or a tight coupling bends at the tip, and a bent tip is what hangs up on every coupling after that. Attach the pull string or cable to the tape end with a smooth, tapered wrap so the splice slides through the couplings, pull the tape out with the cable, and don't use the tape itself as the pulling line for a heavy cable. The foot markings read distance from the tip, so note the reading when the tape reaches the far box and add working slack to it. Wipe the tape dry after a wet conduit and give it a light oil now and then; spring steel rusts, and rust on a tape is grit in the next pull.
