Fishing a cable down a finished wall from the attic to an outlet is a blind job: the top plate hole and the bottom hole are the only two openings, and whatever goes in at the top has to be found at the bottom. The Jonard Tools MRS-24 MagneTriever® makes the finding part a magnet's job. Drop the 10 ft ball chain down the cavity from the hole in the top plate, with the 3/4 in stop ring keeping the end from disappearing into the wall; pull the baseboard, drill the bottom hole, and feed in the 24 in flexible magnetic retriever, bent into a Z or an S, sweeping it back and forth until its neodymium magnets catch the chain. Bring the chain to the hole, grab it with the expandable retriever hook, which reaches up to 18 in, tie a pull string to the eyelet on the chain's end, and use the string to pull the cable through so the chain never carries the load. The retriever, the MRS-RH20 hook, the MRS-BC10 chain, and a storage pouch make up the kit. Patented design, lifetime warranty.

What's in the Kit

  • 24 in flexible magnetic retriever. High-strength neodymium magnets on a shaft that bends into any shape to sweep the cavity and catch the chain.
  • MRS-BC10 ball chain, 10 ft. Feeds down through the wall with ease; the 3/4 in stop ring keeps it from falling in, and the eyelet on the end ties off to a pull string or connects to most wires.
  • MRS-RH20 expandable retriever hook. Extends up to 18 in to grab the chain once it reaches the access hole.
  • Storage pouch. Keeps the three pieces together in the bag.

How It Works

  • Drop the chain down the wall from a hole in the top plate; the stop ring holds the top end at the hole.
  • Open the bottom. Pull the baseboard and drill the access hole.
  • Sweep for the chain. Bend the retriever into a Z or S, feed it into the hole, and sweep back and forth until the magnets catch the chain.
  • Hook it out. Bring the chain to the hole and grab it with the expandable retriever hook.
  • Pull the cable. Tie a pull string to the eyelet and pull the cable through with the string, not the chain.

Features

  • Neodymium magnets. High-strength magnets on a flexible retriever find a ball chain through the whole width of a stud bay.
  • Bends into any shape. Form the retriever to the cavity, around blocking, insulation, or existing wiring.
  • Stop ring and eyelet. The chain can't fall into the wall, and the eyelet takes a pull string or most wires directly.
  • 18 in retriever hook. Reaches up the cavity to bring the chain to the hole.
  • Patented design, lifetime warranty.

Where It Fits

It suits low-voltage technicians adding a Cat6 drop or a coax outlet to a finished room from the attic, electricians fishing a new switch leg or receptacle feed down an existing wall, AV and home theater installers running speaker and HDMI cable down to a wall plate behind a mounted TV, security and smart-home integrators dropping sensor and keypad wiring from above, remodelers and handymen who'd rather drill two small holes than cut a channel in the drywall, anyone who has lowered a weighted string down a wall and spent half an hour trying to hook it with a bent coat hanger, and a bag that already has the FTS-50 fish tape for the straight runs and the MM-800 Magnamole for the horizontal pass through a wall. The FTS-240 steel tape and FTF-1125 fiberglass tape cover the long conduit runs; the MagneTriever is for the top-to-bottom drop inside a finished wall.

Good to Know

Find the stud bay before you drill the top plate, and drill the top hole over the bay the outlet is in; the chain only goes where gravity takes it, so a hole over the wrong bay or over a fire block puts the chain where the retriever can't reach. Let the chain hang free and jiggle it if it hangs up on insulation, and keep a finger on the stop ring so it stays at the top hole. Bend the retriever to suit the cavity, flatter for a shallow wall, deeper for a 2 by 6, and sweep slowly; the magnets grab the chain from a few inches, and a fast sweep flicks it off. Once the chain is out, tie the pull string to the eyelet with a knot that will pass the holes and pull the cable with the string, since the chain is a locator, not a pulling line, and a chain stretched under a cable's load is a chain that breaks in the wall. The eyelet connects to most light wires directly for a short, easy pull. Neodymium magnets are strong, so keep the retriever away from cards, phones, and magnetic media, and keep fingers out from between the magnet and anything steel. Cut the power to any circuit in the wall before you start; the chain and the retriever are both conductive. The retriever length is 24 in and the hook reaches 18 in, which covers a standard wall from the bottom hole; a taller reach is a longer retriever, and the baseboard hole should be low so the two can meet.
