This is a 12-fiber multimode OM1 LC/UPC pigtail, 3 meters long, with a removable orange outer jacket. Each of the 12 OM1 62.5/125 µm fibers has a factory-tested LC/UPC connector on one end and bare fiber on the other for fusion or mechanical splicing. The jacket protects the bundle on the way from the box to the tray and can be stripped back as far as you need, so the strands fan out loose where the space is tight and stay bundled where it isn't. The LC end plugs straight into an adapter panel, so a 12-fiber OM1 cable spliced to this pigtail becomes 12 LC ports in one tray. OM1 carries Gigabit Ethernet to 275 meters. It's the pigtail for an older 62.5 µm plant whose switches have moved to LC optics but whose cable in the conduit is staying. It's sold individually, as one 12-strand pigtail. For an OM1 plant on SC or ST, the PGTSC12-OM1 and PGTST12-OM1; for OM3 or OM4 in the same jacketed LC style, the PGTLC12-OM3 and PGTLC12-OM4; for the enclosure, the RMFP rack-mount panels and the WMFP wall-mount boxes.

Features

  • 12 fibers, LC/UPC. Multimode OM1, 62.5/125 µm, with a UPC connector on each strand.
  • Gigabit to 275 meters. For 1G Ethernet on a 62.5 µm plant.
  • Removable jacket. Strip it back for a tight bend radius in a cramped enclosure, or leave it on for a longer route to the tray.
  • Factory-tested. Low insertion loss and return loss.
  • For fusion or mechanical splicing. Bare fiber at the splice end.
  • Orange. The standard color for OM1.
  • 3 meter length.
  • Sold individually. One 12-strand pigtail.

Where It Fits

It suits a campus or building backbone built on 62.5 µm multimode in the 1990s and 2000s, where the switches have been replaced with LC-port gear but the links are still Gigabit and the cable is staying. It suits fiber distribution units and optical distribution frames in a telecom room, and splice trays in a wall-mount box. Crews re-terminating an old SC or ST panel to LC so the new switches patch without hybrid cords use it, and so do integrators repairing a cut OM1 backbone in a school, a hospital, or a plant. A retrofit where the 12-fiber cable in the conduit is 62.5 µm and the budget covers a new panel but not new fiber is a candidate. It goes with the OM1 bulk fiber, the multimode LC adapters, the splice trays and sleeves, and the fusion splicer from the fiber collections. For an OM1 plant staying on SC, the PGTSC12-OM1, and on ST, the PGTST12-OM1. For OM3 at 10 Gigabit, the jacketed PGTLC12-OM3. For rack-mount splice panels, the RMFP-016 and RMFP-018. For a wall-mount box, the WMFP-011. For the OM1 patch cords on the other side of the panel, the LCLCOM1, and for LC to SC or ST gear, the LCSCOM1 and LCSTOM1.

Good to Know

Match the fiber, not just the connector: this is OM1 62.5/125 µm, and it has to be spliced to 62.5 µm cable and patched with OM1 cords. Splicing it to 50 µm OM3 or OM4 puts a core mismatch at the splice, and light going from the 62.5 µm core into a 50 µm core loses a few dB at that one joint; the orange jacket and orange cords are the visual cue that you're on 62.5. The LC connector doesn't change the fiber's limits: OM1 carries Gigabit to 275 meters and 10 Gigabit only to about 33 meters, so this is a pigtail for keeping a Gigabit plant running on newer switches, not for a 10G upgrade; when the plant moves to 10G, the cable in the conduit changes too, and the pigtail should be OM3 or OM4 to match. Decide how much jacket to remove before you cut: the jacket is the strength member and the snag guard, so leave it on for the length of the route between the adapter plate and the tray and strip it only where the strands have to fan out and bend, which is usually the last foot or so at the tray. A 3 meter pigtail leaves room for that route in a deep enclosure; coil the excess in the slack ring rather than cutting it short. Strip the buffer and the coating back to bare fiber, cleave, splice to the incoming cable, and seat the sleeve in the tray; set the splicer for multimode, since a single-mode program will balk at the 62.5 µm core. Dress the bundle and tie it loosely to the tray so the connectors aren't carrying the fibers' weight, and keep the bend radius generous even where the strands are bare. Splice in the standard color sequence, blue through aqua for fibers 1 through 12, and match it to the incoming cable's buffer tubes so the as-built is honest. Clean and inspect every LC connector before it goes into an adapter, and keep the dust caps on until then; an LC ferrule is small and a speck of dust covers a lot of it.
