The Jonard Tools TK-121 Fiber Prep Kit+ is the core set of fiber access and prep tools in a case. It covers the sequence from an unopened cable to a bare fiber: the BTR-6, FOD-2000, MS-306, and CST-1900 slit and ring buffer tubes, drop cable, small mid-span entries, and round cable, the three-hole JIC-375 strips the 1.6 to 3 mm jacket, the 600 to 900 µm buffer, and the 250 µm coating down to the 125 µm glass, and the JIC-186 shears cut the Kevlar strength member, insulation, tape, and ties. Diagonal cutters, long nose pliers, a multi-bit screwdriver, a zoom flashlight, and a pack of wet fiber wipes round out the set, and the H-90 21-pocket case keeps all eleven tools in their places. It's the TK-121B in a case instead of a backpack, for the technician who works out of a van or a shop.
What's in the Kit
- Cable access. BTR-6 buffer tube ringer (up to 6 mm); FOD-2000 fiber optic drop cable slitter; MS-306 mid-span slit and ring tool (1.2 to 3.3 mm); CST-1900 round cable strip and ring tool. Between them they slit and ring the fiber cable types an installer meets most, without touching the fibers inside.
- Stripping and cutting. JIC-375 three-hole fiber optic stripper, for the 1.6 to 3 mm jacket, the 600 to 900 µm buffer coating, and the 250 µm coating, exposing the 125 µm glass; JIC-186 wire and Kevlar cutting shears for the strength member, cable insulation, tape, and ties; JIC-2288 8 in high-leverage diagonal cutting pliers; JIC-842 long nose and side cutting pliers.
- Cleaning. FW-5 wet fiber wipes, pack of 5.
- General tools. SD-61 six-in-one multi-bit screwdriver with Phillips and other bits; FL-2000 LED flashlight with zoom lens.
- H-90 rugged 21-pocket tool case. A pocket for every tool, so a missing one shows before you leave the site.
Where It Fits
It suits FTTH and MDU installers opening drop cable and small distribution cable at the house, the terminal, and the riser, splicing crews who want the prep basics in a case that sits next to the splicer, maintenance technicians who need to open a cable and strip a fiber without carrying the full entry set, a starter kit for a new fiber technician, and a shop that stocks matched kits for its vans.
Good to Know
This is a prep kit, not a termination kit: it gets the fiber opened, stripped, and wiped, and the cleaver, the connector cleaners, the fusion splicer or connector kit, and the test gear come from elsewhere; the TK-161 adds the connector cleaners and a visual fault locator to this same set of tools, and the TK-151 adds the cleaver as well. The MS-306 is the smallest of the mid-span tools, for cable from 1.2 to 3.3 mm, so a larger distribution cable needs one of the bigger sizes, which the TK-106, TK-107, and TK-107B kits carry. Set the depth on a scrap before the first live cut on a cable you haven't opened before, since the aim is to cut the sheath and nothing underneath. Ring a buffer tube with the BTR-6 and flex it to snap the tube rather than cutting through, which keeps the blade off the fibers. Strip in stages with the three-hole stripper, jacket, then buffer, then coating, taking the coating off in short pulls rather than one long one so the glass isn't scored. The wet wipes are for cleaning the bare fiber and the jacket before a splice or a connector, and they're a consumable, so stock refills. Kevlar dulls ordinary cutters; use the shears. Confirm what's in a hybrid cable before you open it, since none of these tools are rated for cutting into a cable that may carry power. For the same tools on your back, the TK-121B swaps the case for a backpack.
